“You always had this issue; sparkling water – hiccups.”

I didn’t remember that. I just knew that, for more than 20 years, I avoided drinking sparkly water or fizzy drinks; but I had no idea why; I thought I just don’t like the sensation.

I didn’t remember the hiccups because it was a thing void of emotions. Yet, for some reason, my friend has some emotions about me having hiccups.

There are no emotions about where you left your keys… you get emotional (angry) that you didn’t leave them in the usual spot. That emotion (feeling angry) makes you remember the fact that you’re misplacing your keys and you might draw the conclusion you’re a forgetful person. You can miss the point: the issue is not that you don’t remember, but leaving your keys randomly.

The third significant reason why you might feel you’re losing your memory is that you have an expectation about how you should remember things.

Most of us expect to remember in pictures, but for (+-) 40% of people memories are feelings (sensations), tastes, smells, sounds, with occasionally faded or distorted images. You might not remember how it looks like a childhood friend, but you might remember how you felt when you saw that person.

The fourth significant reason why you might have memory gaps is that your unconscious mind selects what feels relevant to be stored.

When you count, you must remember the last number you say and what follows; what’s before that, it’s irrelevant.
